Akina Mama wa Afrika (AMwA) is seeking young feminists interested in alternatives ways of
organizing for the achievement of Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) to
serve in a consultancy capacity as in-country Project Liaisons (PL) for the Make Way
Programme, a new and exciting youth focused intervention. PLs will provide strategic input
and support towards the implementation of the Make Way Programme in Rwanda, Ethiopia
and Zambia.

About Akina Mama wa Afrika
Akina Mama wa Afrika (AMwA) is a feminist Pan-African leadership development
organization that was founded in 1985 and is headquartered in Kampala, Uganda. Our work is
rooted in feminist principles and beliefs guided by the Charter of Feminist Principles for
African Feminists which define our leadership development program and movement building
activities. Our thematic areas of focus include; Women’s Political Leadership, Sexual and
Reproductive Health and Rights, and Economic Justice and Climate Change.

About the The Make Way Programme
The Make Way orogramme is a five-year (2021-2025) initiative that aims to break down
barriers to SRHR by promoting a new way of looking at and organising SRHR issues through
an intersectional lens. This means making overlapping vulnerabilities visible to understand
their effects on people’s SRHR. The Make Way consortium consists of Akina Mama wa
Afrika, The Circle of Concerned African Women Theologians, Kenya, Forum for African
Women Educationalists, Liliane Foundation, VSO Netherlands, and Wemos, and we work in
partnership with the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The programme is being implemented
the in Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda, and Zambia, the (Eastern and Southern) African
region and at the global level.

What’s the job? (Roles and responsibilities)
AMwA is looking to mobilize and deploy young women and gender expansive persons to serve
as in-country liaisons to provide contextualised and strategic input into our work. The PL is a
consultant who undertakes tasks on behalf of AMwA on a part time basis. PLs will serve as
ears and eyes on the ground; taking note of emerging trends in SRHR organizing, monitoring
and assessing risks, and notifying the organization. They will provide contextualised expertise
and knowledge on SRHR, help grow AMwA’s networks, and from time to time, provide
support for strategic activities. The roles and responsibilities of PLs are listed below;

  • Provide AMwA with quality, strategic, contextualised and well considered
    information on SRHR and its intersections with other thematic areas of the
    organization’s work.
  • Provide meaningful in-depth and context-relevant feedback and technical input on
    workplans, proposed annual activities, and other processes.
  • Support in conceptualizing and convening in-country interventions.
  • Represent AMwA at strategic meetings with stakeholders
  • Promote awareness and visibility of AMwA’s work amongst relevant stakeholders
    and support with expanding the organization’s networks.
  • Develop periodic reports (activity and quarterly) as required.
  • Support the Communications as well as the Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning
    departments with in-country connections as needed.Essential experience
  • A university degree, preferably in the fields of gender, human rights or other relevant fields.
  • Some experience doing gender justice work with a focus on sexual reproductive and health
    rights of women and gender expansive persons, and other minoritized groups.
  • A proven commitment to women’s rights activism and demonstrable experience in social
    justice work or human rights broadly.
  • Evidence of thought leadership through writing blogs, papers, opinion pieces, etc, and
    engagement in panel discussions is strongly desired.
  • Ability to organize and work collaboratively with a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Proven interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working
    relations with people in a multi-cultural, multi-interest, multi-ethnic environment
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision strongly desired.
