As the world continues to struggle with the Coronavirus pandemic, feminists and women’s rights activists have warned about the shadow pandemic of violence against women and girls that is bound to continue wreaking havoc in women’s lives if no action is taken to combat it. It is so deeply rooted a scourge, that not even a global health crisis can stop it in its tracks. The media is awash with stories of women and girls who have been sexually harassed or even raped.
The role of the media in shaping mindsets and perpetuating stereotypes in our societies cannot go ignored. When it comes to rape and other forms of sexual assault, we have seen trends of belittling the incidences, victim blaming and shaming of survivors and in one way or another impeding their access to justice and consequently, healing.
Akina Mama wa Afrika (AMwA) in partnership with Hivos and Amplify Change is hosting a conversation on Thursday May 28th 2020 at 11:00am to 1:00pm as part of the online campaign to end sexual harassment at the workplace where we shall be discussing how the media can be tasked to adopt a feminist approach of recognizing power dynamics, equality and justice when reporting about sexual assault and about women in general.
