CALL FOR ALUMNI OF THE AFRICAN WOMEN’S LEADERSHIP INSTITUTE (AWLI)

Have you participated in Akina Mama wa Afrika’s African Women’s Leadership Institute (AWLI)? You may have been part of the inaugural class of 1997 or a more recent one but have lost touch with us and are looking to reconnect. We are looking for you!

Background

In 1997, Akina Mama wa Afrika launched the AWLI. A leadership institute for African women renowned for its holistic P.O.T (Personal development, Organizing Skills and Taking Action) training framework that provides a powerful and holistic feminist grounding for African women, girls and gender expansive persons to define, analyze and articulate their experiences of oppression and devise solutions for sustained change. It aims at developing a strong cohort of feminist leaders to effectively influence policy and decision-making individually and collectively. The programme targets African women aged 18-35 in various spheres and nurtures their leadership capacity through feminist political education for a bold and intersectional feminist movement in Africa.

Why the call for Alumni?

Since its inception, the African Women’s Leadership Institute has equipped thousands of alumni to individually and collectively dismantle structural systems of oppression, to lead and influence the gender justice agenda and bring about transformative change in their communities and the world at large.  As Akina Mama wa Afrika, we are proud of the strides each one of the alumni is making in building a dignified and equitable feminist society for African women, girls, and gender expansive persons. While AWLI Alumni have been great ambassadors in building a movement for transformative feminist leadership in Africa, we have lost touch with a number of them over years, as sometimes happens when there are transitions in personnel, modes of communication, etc. At AMwA, we believe that transformative change can only be achieved when a critical mass challenges the status quo. We see the AWLI as an indispensable component of this feminist movement building toolkit as it is a space for awakening feminist consciousness and organizing based on solidarity premised on shared values and issues. In this regard, we would like to reconnect to rebuild relationships and harness the power of the collective to effect change.

Target group: All African Women, girls and gender expansive persons that have attended the African Women’s Leadership Institute.

How this information is to be used:?

  • To develop an AWLI alumni directory. As an organization we are eager to know the number of persons that have attended AWLI, where they are located and how they can be contacted for future engagements. This will guide us on how to meaningfully engage alumni.
  • To inform the development of the AWLI alumni engagement strategy. AMwA is intentional about strengthening the feminist movement through its AWLI alumni. In that regard the organization is developing an alumni engagement strategy which is intended to foster networking and sharing of experiences among alumni, tapping into each other’s skills and expertise, celebrating our successes and as well fostering solidarity.
